Balmoral Sailing Club held the first handicap start race on Saturday.
The morning had been a bit of a wild affair for the Junior sailors with a fresh and gusty Westerly providing a challenge for the young sailors but by the time the afternoon race was ready to start the breeze had abated and swung around to a very light SE. An incoming tide would also make things interesting.
We also had a shuffle of crews leading to Cullen crewing for Tara.
The front-markers got away nicely with Andrew Dent (Fast Glass) leading and Oliver / Gavin Cooke (Firefly) catching Molly M (Lewie/Breda Thatcher) on the first work. They were able to maintain a lead over the back markers. With Jazze (Tara Wilson / Cullen Hughes) just ahead of a tight battle between Waterborne at Last (Douglas Raftesath / Spencer McKay) and Yenda Lee (Cam / Stirling McKay).
The breeze briefly increased on the first spinnaker leg and some patient sailing from Oliver allowed Firefly to finally catch Fast Glass at the bottom mark - however the weather would intrude.
The wind died across the courset and the two leaders were swept north - away from the next mark in over a 1 kn of tide.
The rest of the fleet were being swept towards the bottom mark and the breeze returned to greet them as they rounded the mark and headed off upwind.
Yenda Lee ground their way to the front short tacking out of the tide on the next work to lead at the top mark ahead of Waterborne at Last and Jazze.
But Douglas and Spencer crept past downwind to the take the gun at the bottom make of a shortened course.
Unfortunately, Douglas forgot to sign on so Cam and Stirling collected the chocolates ahead of Jazze and Firefly.
