RACE REPORTS

PRE-WORLDS DAY FOUR

12/30/2018

Congratulations to Campbell and Stirling McKay, Australian National Champions!
Campbell and Stirling started the day trailing Damian Carey and Austin Freer by five points, with a maximum of three races to be sailed.
In the first race of the day, they started with an emphatic bullet, but Damian and Austin claimed second, meaning they still held a four point lead.
In the second race, Campbell and Stirling came first again, but this time Damian and Austin came fifth. This meant that scores were now tied, but Team McKay won on a countback.
And so, we have new national champions. It was an emotional night for Campbell. As he said at the prize-giving dinner, "In 1978, I had a little dream..."

2019 PRE-WORLDS DAY 3

12/29/2018

Day Three of the Pre-Worlds saw lighter than expected conditions, with the breeze mostly under 15 knots. The swell was likewise a little bit smaller, the traffic lighter, and there was only the occasional moment of imminent, on-rushing death.
In R5, Douglas Raftesath and Spencer McKay claimed first place in Waterborne At Last, followed by Campbell and Stirling McKay in McMissile, then Damian Carey and Austin Freer in Bob.
R6 saw Jessie Andrawartha and Grant Atherton in Foxy Lady III claim their first win after a strong showing all series. Damian and Austin claimed yet another second, and Chris and Daisy Fuller from Hayling Island Sailing Club took third.
In the last race of the day, Campbell and Stirling McKay notched up their third win of the series. However Damian and Austin in Bob remain in the lead after another second place. Third were Jonathan and Phoebe Branch in B2, backing up from their win in R3.
So, with one day and up to three races still to sail, Damian Carey (the reigning national champion) and Austin Freer hold a 5 point lead over Campbell and Stirling McKay, with Waterborne At Last and Foxy Lady III both a further seven points back.
It looks like regatta toolbox is still not working, so look out for photos of the results on this page.
Also, don't forget to check out Robert Owe-Young's daily photo albums. Some amazing shots there. The Day 3 album is here: https://robertowe-young.smugmug.com/2019-Mirror-Aus-Titl…/…/

2019 PRE-WORLDS DAY 2

12/29/2018

Day Two of the Pre-Worlds saw three races in another nor’easter. Water was a bit lumpy with wind over outgoing tide, and the usual Sydney Harbour “washing machine” from boat traffic from jet boats up to giant cruise liners.
Campbell and Stirling McKay continued their winning run in McMissile with 1st place in R2, followed by Damien Carey in Bob and Chris Fuller in Ripples.
In R2, it was Jon Branch from Connells Point Sailing club in B2, followed by Damien again, then Jessie Andrawartha in Foxy Lady III.
In R3, it was McMissile again with another bullet, then Damien Carey collecting another second, the Douglas Raftesath in Waterborne At Last.
Full results are not yet up, but photos of the provisional results have been posted to this page and on the IMCA NSW website.

2019 PRE-WORLDS DAY 1

12/29/2018

WHAT A GREAT DAY! Day 1 of the Nationals/Pre-Worlds saw a typical Sydney nor'easter of around 15-20 knots. A strong outgoing tide against the breeze made the harbour a bit lumpy, and the usual ferries, sea planes and cruise liners get things from getting too boring.
Campbell and Spencer McKay in McMissile claimed 1st place in R1, followed by Mark and Caitlin Nash in Mad Cat, then Jessie Andrewartha and Grant Atherton in Foxy Lady III. Results will hopefully be up on regatta toolbox shortly (https://www.regattatoolbox.com/results?eventID=BimMkeXTJV), in the meantime, check the photo thanks to International Mirror Class of South Australia.
Also, look out for the fantastic photos taken by Robert Owe-Young (https://robertowe-young.smugmug.com/2019-Mirror-Aus-Titl…/…/). I'll send a link to the daily album each day in a separate post.
Today, the forecast is for similar, but stronger winds. First signal not before 1400. The morning surf lesson at Bondi has been cancelled.

Balmoral Mirror Race Report 2 December 2018

12/7/2018

A moderate sunny NE greeted the Mirror fleet on Saturday with numbers boosted with the guest appearance of Mark Nash and daughter Caitlin in the Madcat (HHSC) looking for some increased competition. The boats got away to an even start with Wave Catcher (Cullen/James Hughes) getting the prime spot next to the Starters Boat and holding on to lead around the first mark ahead of Firefly (Gavin/Oliver Cooke) and Matcat who arrived at the mark together.  Close behind were Jazze (Tara Wilson) and Molly M (Lewie/Breda Thatcher).
Madcat showed good speed on the spinnaker run to close in on Wave Catcher who had slowed when a spinnaker fitting pulled out.
Following the gybe, Matcat pounced and took the lead around the bottom mark. Jazze also powered through Firefly after the gybe to move up to 3rd.
Heavy traffic around the bottom mark forced Wave Catcher to tack early on the next work but it didn’t help and Madcat extended the lead up the next work and Firefly moving back up to 3rd.Wave Catcher closed in on the  square run but Matcat was able to protect the lead to record a fine win, followed by Wave Catcher, Firefly, Jazze and Molly M.
