Round 1 of the 2019-2020 NSW State Championships was held at Hunters Hill Sailing Club on the 24th of November. Twelve boats competed, with teams arriving from both land and sea. Light and fickle winds saw lots of close racing and a tense game of snakes and ladders as the breeze came and went in different parts of the course.
As usual, there were lots of family teams, and it was great to see the young crews dealing with the light conditions in good humour.
The first race was won by local experts Paul and Tess Plowman in Girra Girra, followed by Cullen and James Hughes in Wave Catcher (coming through from a long way back in the pack), then Douglas Raftesath and Luke Roberts in Waterborne At Last.
In the second race, it was Jonathan and Phoebe Branch from Connells Point, sailing in B2, followed by Cullen and James in Wave Catcher, and then Jacksun and Gwen Hanna, sailing in Yenda Lee.
In the light conditions, only two races were possible, with Wave Catcher's two second place results putting them at the top of the table, one point ahead of Girra Girra, with B2 hot on their heels just two more points back.
The leader skipper for the Ladies trophy was Sarah MacMaster, sailing with her daughter Tika in Little Viking.
A special thanks goes to Hunters Hill Sailing Club for hosting a great regatta!
